Reel and Meal at the New Deal Café

In partnership with the Baha’i  Community of Greenbelt

Will feature “Dawnland”

Monday, January 20, 2020

Upstander Project’s documentary film, Dawnland, tells the story of the removal of Native American children from their homes in Maine, and the trailblazing Child Welfare Truth & Reconciliation Commission that was formed to begin the process of healing, cooperation, and justice.

The people of the four tribes of Maine, collectively known as the Wabanaki, were subjected to the forced removal of their children for placement in white homes and boarding schools even as recently as the 1970s.

Maine is the first state in the country to initiate a Native American truth and reconciliation effort. Dawnland aired on Independent Lens in November 2018 and was awarded an Emmy® for outstanding research in 2019.
